William Jay Sydeman will be performing his John F. Kennedy: 50th Anniversary Memorial Concert on Sunday July 7, at 5:00 pm at the Mendocino Art Center Main Gallery.

RETROSPECTIVE: Mr. Sydeman will discuss his works and play recordings in this 85th year of his life.

I
Study No. 2 for Orchestra
Performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra
on November 22, 1963

II
In Memoriam: John F Kennedy
Commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra
Narrated by E. G. Marshall

Biography: Born in New York City in 1928 and educated at Manhattan’s Mannes School of Music, he quickly became one of the most sought after and honored composers of his generation, receiving commissions from such prestigious groups as the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Tanglewood Music Center, and the Boston Symphony, which premiered his orchestral work in memory of John F. Kennedy in 1966.

Mr. Sydeman is one of America’s most prolific and inventive composers. In an era in which many of his colleagues have defined their careers through a handful of brief works, he has produced an output whose scope and variety are absolutely unique with more than 400 compositions that is reminiscent of the Baroque and Classical eras.

In 1970, after a heady period that included awards from the National Institute of Arts and letters, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Library of Congress, Mr. Sydeman left New York, and composition, to begin a journey of personal and artistic exploration. He taught at a teenage drug rehabilitation center in rural California, spent two years in Los Angeles commercial music industry, and another year studying Steiner education in England, before settling in Hawaii, where he composed liturgical music for a Tibetan Buddhist Temple. In 1981, Mr. Sydeman returned to the mainland, and began teaching at the Steiner College in Fair Oaks, California, and finally returned to composition as the defining aspect of his life.

In 1988, Mr. Sydeman moved to Nevada City, California. Like many of his fellow artists, he has created a private, nurturing environment for his compositional work, but has not retreated from public life. He has devoted himself to making music of all periods accessible to everyone with open ears and hearts. Whether as a conductor of visiting professionals, mentor of talented amateurs, or teacher of our gifted youth.

Mariko Irie, Garden Tour Poster Artist

Get behind the scenes on Saturday, June 22, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and get a glimpse of some of the most beautiful gardens here on the Mendocino coast. This self guided tour will take you to ART GARDENS where there are walkways, seating areas, patios, ponds, lawns, flowers, bushes and trees. This garden has been a 9 year continuing project of love.

Century Old Garden

As part of this self guided tour you will enjoy a Century Old Garden which was planted by the late botanist and horticulturist Doris Youngstrom and hosts a wide variety of rare plants and trees. Enjoy paths that wind through beds of 20 foot high rhododendrons, proteas, azaleas, and strawberry manzanita trees. This property also features two ponds, wooden gates, stone sculptures, and ceramic garden bowls. A unique feature of this site is a century old greenhouse, once used for fuschia and rhododendron propogation. Master gardener and botanical specialist Antonio Wuttke will be on site to demonstrate garden restoration techniques.

Ocean View Garden

This property offers spectacular ocean views and its own deeded island with its ocean carved arches. This property has a beautiful home, made from huge redwood timbers salvaged from the Old Caspar Mill. They have enlarged the home and created the gardens over the years, using a nautical theme to unify them with the natural landscape. There is a very stately brick courtyard that embraces a sheltered garden and provides a dramatic entry portal to the home. There is also a sculptured concrete grotto and serpentine stone pathway that will lead you through several hidden gardens. Over the years, they have planted and nurtured thousands of shrubs, grasses and trees.

Headlands Garden

This beautiful property is surrounded by a state park and coastal headlands. This charming redwood residence, enhanced with Northern European details, inspired the garden’s layout and many of its architectural elements. They have a sunken garden which required a substantial excavation to lower it beyond the harsh winds, thus creating a micro-climate for an array of unexpected plants. They also have a protected orchard garden which brims with blooms and a heather garden featuring mounding forms in an exposed contoured tapestry of texture color.

Sunbelt Garden

This transitional retreat is nestled between the pygmy forest and the beautiful redwood forest. Here you will find a great collection of azaleas, irises, dahlias, gladiolas and zinnias, with many other flowers. There are pathways through this park-like setting that leads you to an array of perennials and annuals. There are also spring fed ponds and a variety of vegetables and fruit trees. From noon to 3:00 pm local artist Lynzee Holt will display her north coast themed abstracts and landscapes. As a special bonus, pottery guru Christopher Cisper will showcase his ceramic pieces while performing original songs on the guitar. This garden is designed by renowned landscape architect Gary Ratway and maintained by Martin Eligio of Fort Bragg Gardening.

Mendocino Art Center Garden Shop & Plant Sale

On June 21, 10 am to 5 pm, and June 22, 9 am to 5 pm, browse the Mendocino Art Center’s Garden Shop, featuring an array of plants, creative handcrafted garden art and many other surprises!

The Mendocino Art Center grounds are beautifully landscaped, primarily with native plants, and the Zacha Sculpture Garden features not only sculpture, but a lovely tiled courtyard surrounded by the art studios.

The classically trained players of the Real Vocal String Quartet whose members also comprise’s of a four piece vocal ensemble. RVSQ re-imagines the classical string quartet as an inclusive vehicle for innovative string playing. In concert, they bang on their violins, stomp their feet, and allow African trance music to influence their take on old-time fiddle tunes. Originating new repertoire while exploring the confluence of strings and vocal music, this unique ensemble is the only combined vocal and string quartet performing on the chamber music scene, or any scene today.

RVSQ was formed by violinest Irene Sazer. Alisa Rose also plays violin, and Dina MacCabee is a violist and Jessica Ivry plays the cello. The group’s broad repertoire embraces the diverse influences of all four players, from jazz and rock to West African music and bluegrass. Their chemistry as a musical group has become a catalyst for a creative expression using American, African, Brazilian, Balken and Appalachian inspirations to stretch beyond the limits of string music.

RVSQ’s recent performances include Yoshi’s San Francisco, U.C. Berkeley, Freight & Salvage, Old First Concerts, Switchboard New Music Festival, Drom NYC, Whole Earth Festival, and the Fillmore.

Catch their performance on Sunday April 7 at 5:00 pm at the Mendocino Art Center Main Gallery. Located at 45200 Little Lake Street at Kasten Street. Tickets $15. 707-937-5818 or 800-653-3328.

Elena Casanova

Elena Casanova, a Cuban born pianist, has a passion for her native music. For most of her life, she has been bringing the soul of the Cuban Masters to audiences across the country. She studied at the Alejandro Garcia Caturla Music Conservatory in Havana, the San Francisco Conservatory, Pacific Union College, and graduated with her Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance from University of Redlands.

Casanova studied with Robert Bowman, Paul Glover, Annie Kim (a student of the Cuban pianist Jorge Bolet) Louanne Long, Maria D. “Marilola” (Vasquez) Robles, Tom Turinia, and Dr. Lynn Wheeler.

She has most recently performed the Poulenc Concerto for Two Pianos with Elizabeth MacDougall, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 “The Emperor” and Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

Her enthusiasm for the music of her country led her to record a piano solo album released on the MSR Label in 2005. Her album “Recordando” is a sampling of the Maestros of Cuban Classical Music.

In 2008 Elena recorded “Fuente Sin Igual” an album done as a gift to her father on his birthday. The album consists of improvisations on her favorite Spanish Hymns. Most recently Casanova has worked with Jim Stewart of Wine Country Films to produced and edit a number of live performances available on DVD, which include the yearly sold out performances of the Professional Pianist Concert and most recently “Life at Acoustic Café” featuring singer/songwriter Marcos Pereda, Will Siegel on guitar and tiple, Steve Baird, on bass, Joel Cohen, cello and Amunka and Isa Dávila on percussion. She is also currently working on a new album “Music for my children”, a compilation of works for young children by lesser-known Cuban composers Maria Emma Botet, Jose Fernández de Coca, Maria Matilde Alea, Enrique Guerrero, and others.

Casanova is a very active member of the community in Mendocino County, California. She is President of the Board of the Community Concert Association and donates her time and energy to promote organizations like the Alzheimer’s Foundation, the Allegro Scholarship Fund, Arts in the School Program and many other music organizations in her community.
The curtains are opening for the Mendocino Theatre Company’s 2013 Season

On the 36th season of continuous productions starting back on June 3, 1977 with the production of “The Visit”, The Mendocino Theatre Company is announcing its 2013 season. This year they will be presenting all 21st century American plays, including three finalist or winners of the Pulitzer Prize. These six playwrights represent the future of American theater. They tell timeless, American stories with both innovation and south in the tradition and caliber of Tennessee Williams, Bertolt Brecht, and Arthur Miller.

The first production this year will be: BOY GETS GIRL by Rebecca Gilma and Directed by Bob Cohen. Playing from March 14 to April 14.

From the writer of The Sweetest Swing in Baseball comes a grippingly suspenseful thriller both stirring and entertaining. Not since Wait Until Dark has an American play captured the attention of its audience so fiercely from beginning to end. Manhattan-based writer Theresa Bedell is in complete command of her successful professional life, until a casual blind date with a man named Tony leads to his unwieldy obsession. Theresa suddenly finds herself struggling to maintain control of not only her personal life, but her career, dignity, and very identity in the post-feminist world in which all of her successes were built.

The second production: BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO by Rajiv Joseph and Directed by Felicia Freites. Playing from May 2 to May 26.

A tiger in the war-ravaged Baghdad Zoo is being guarded by two young soldiers: the steady, opportunistic Tom, and the brash, ready-for-action Kev. When the introduction of Uday Hussein’s gold-plated gun, a war trophy stolen by Tom, leads to the Tiger’s death, the ghost of the tiger remains to lead the audience through an existential journey in the streets of Baghdad among the ghosts of war both living and dead. Known for Robin Williams’ tour de force performance as the tiger on Broadway in 2011 and as a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2010, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo is a deeply spiritual comedy/drama about the nature of man and God in war.

The third production: THE 39 STEPS by Patrick Barlow and Directed by Ricci Dedola. Playing from June 6 to July 7.

Broadway’s longest-running comedy, and the winner of two Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award, and the Laurence Olivier Award for the best new comedy of 2007, is The 39 Steps, a mile-a-minute comedy based on the Alfred Hitchcock film and the John Buchan novel of the same name. Acted with just one man, one woman, and two clowns playing an estimated 250 roles between them, The 39 Steps is a highly physical satire featuring train chases, plane crashes, shadowy spies, and a love story to boot! One of the most inventive new comedies of the 21st century, and a sure to be audience favorite, The 39 Steps is a thrilling piece of theatre one part Hitchcock, and one part Naked Gun.

The forth production: DOUBT: A PARABLE by John Patrick Shanley and Directed by Sandra Hawthorne. Playing July 18 to August 18.

Set in 1964 against the backdrop of an America in the midst of change, a progressive young Priest’s conduct comes under question by Sister Aloysius Beauvier, a veteran nun twice his age. As questions begin to plague her, Sister Aloysius finds herself consumed by doubt in an ancient institution that once provided the comforts of community, certainty, and faith. Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for drama, and a major motion picture starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt: A Parable is widely regarded as one of the most important and accomplished new plays of the 21st Century.

The fifth production: IN THE NEXT ROOM by Sarah Ruhl and Directed by Ann Woodhead. Playing August 29 to September 29.

It is the beginning of the age of electricity, the awakening of scientific curiosity, and in the case of Mrs. Givings, the awakening of a quite different kind of curiosity as well. Lovingly devoted to her physician husband and newborn daughter, Catherine Givings notices strange sounds coming from her husband’s “operating theatre” in the next room. Desperately curious about her husband’s new invention for treating “hysteria” in women, Mrs. Givings sets out to find deeper satisfaction as both a mother and wife, but also as a woman. A finalist for the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play) is an uproariously wild comedy that has audiences giggling from start to finish. While this “hysterical” comedy is truly Victorian, underneath the laughter is a poignant story about the nature of love that is very much relevant today.

The sixth and last production of the year: TIME STANDS STILL by Donald Margulies and Directed by Betty Abramson. Playing October 10 to November 10.

From the writer of Collected Stories comes a touching and realistic story, delicately reflective of the tumultuous times in which we live. Sarah Goodwin, an acclaimed photojournalist, returns from a war zone with scars both physical and emotional. As she struggles to retain a challenging life of thrilling adventure and hard work, she finds herself presented with the choice of a more comfortable, conventional life with her loving partner James. For those who understand what it means to bring their work home, Time Stands Still is a deeply explorative human story about finding oneself at a crossroads, new beginnings, and the differences that give each of our lives color.

For tickets for any or all of these productions order online using this link, or phone the Box Office at 707-937-4477.
