On January 6, in Cloverdale, California the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition was held. There were 5,500 wines submitted for this years competition.

Originally founded in 1983 as the Cloverdale Citrus Fair Wine Competition. The first competition was modest in size. 15 wineries entered 45 wines, with a single panel of 5 judges awarded 30 medals.

The competition rapidly grew in the 1990′s to over 100 wineries. Eligibility was increased to include wineries in Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino. It was renamed the Tri-County Wine Competition. Later on the competition expanded to the entire North Coast Appellation. The areas included all wineries in the counties of Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, Lake, Solano and Marin. It was called the California North Coast Wine Competition. In 2000, the San Francisco Chronicle became the naming sponsor of the competition with the Cloverdale Citrus Fair remaining the host, becoming the producer of the new San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

The 2001 competition was limited to Northern California but was expanded to the full state of California from 2002-2004. The 2004 competition had over 2,500 entries from 565 California wineries.

In 2004, the San Francisco Chronicle Competition expanded the wine competition to include California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho for the 2005 competition. The total wine entries for the 2005 competition was over 3,200 wine entries which made the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition the largest wine competition of American wines in the world. In 2006, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition expanded its geographical base nationally.

In 2001, a group of Mendocino winemakers challenged themselves to create for the world a wine derived from Mendocino’s wine heritage, individual diversity and best grape varieties. Veteran winemakers with decades of experience created Coro Mendocino.

Coro Mendocino wine is made entirely in Mendocino County and exclusively from Mendocino County fruit, in which our wines shares a juried quality standard and a trademarked package. This is the first time in U. S. history that winemakers from any region have created parameters for a wine distinctive to their area.

Coro Mendocino is a class of ultra-premium wines made to showcase the rich heritage and unique characteristics of our Mendocino County home. Every Coro is a signature blend individually crafted from Mendocino County grapes in accordance with strict Coro Mendocino bylaws and certified by the Mendocino Winegrowers Alliance to carry the Coro Mendocino mark and label.

To qualify as a Coro bottling, the wine must be 100% Mendocino grown, and come from Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah and other grapes that have been grown in the county for generations. Coro’s blending rules begin with the requirements that the wine contain at least 40% Zinfandel and that no other variety can eclipse the percentage of Zinfandel. The complex blending rules are compounded by defined ranges for specific chemistry, such as alcolhol and PH, and also rules for aging. 100% new oak for at least 12 months, and another year in the bottle on top of that. All these factors make it relatively expensive to produce a coro bottling, which must also use a special label and top of the line cork.

Varietal Makeup: Zinfandel to compose a minimum of 40% and a maximum of 70% of each Coro blend. Zinfandel shall compromise dominant percentage of each Coro blend.

Second Tier Varietals: Percentage of any one not exceed Zinfandel as majority component and maximum of 5% out of vintage. Syrah, Petite Sirah, Carignane, Sangiovese, Grenache, Dolcetto, Charbono, Barbera, Primitovo.

Selection Panel and Review Process: A selection panel of 5 members of Consortium Mendocino, at least 3 being participating winemakers, will be appointed each year at the annual meeting. The purpose of the panel will be to supervise the Coro tasting process, to conduct the qualifying selection panel tasting ( a simple pass/fail majority vote) and to conduct the pre-release bottle review tasting.

Located only 45 minutes from Stevenswood Spa Resort on Saturday, July 31 at Greenwood Ridge Vineyards, at Philo on Highway 128 in the Anderson Valley wine growing region will be the California Wine Tasting Championships. This unique event was started in 1983, and over the years, thousands have participated.

They call it a wine tasting competition, but it’s really a chance to have a lot of fun and learn a few tasting techniques while enjoying a great selection of wines. Included with the wine tasting competitions are chocolate and cheese tasting contests, and a series of wine friendly snacks served throughout the day.

Sign up in the category that fits: Novice, amateur or professional. Everyone is welcome to take advantage of our complimentary wine tasting boot camp, where you will get tips to boost your confidence and your score.

How does it work:

There will be samples of eight California wines that will appear at your table. It’s your job to identify each varietal. Is it a Cabernet or maybe a Zinfandel? They make it easy by giving you a list of ten common varietals from which to choose. You will make your guesses and they reveal the identity of each wine. In the double competition, you and your partner can compare notes before making your decisions.

If you are one of the top three finishers in the amateur or pro division you advance to the Grand Championship round. Ties are broken by “sudden death” taste-offs, offering dramatic entertainment for the spectators. Top finishers in each division will receive personalized certificates, great prizes, and recognition in there fall newsletter.

Rules:

A contestant may enter the California Wine Tasting Championships as a novice, amateur or professional. Anyone professionally involved with wine production, wine sales, or wine writing must enter the professional category. Contestants must be 21 years old.

Contestants may enter both the singles competition, held on Saturday and the double on Sunday. In doubles competitions, partners are permitted to confer after tasting each wine.

Each contestant or team will taste eight wines, sequentially, with four minutes allowed to identify each wine by varietal name. Tasters with scores in the top 50% will advance to the final round, in which they will taste and identify eight more wines. In the final round, bonus points will be awarded for correct identification of region, vintage date, and producer.

First, second and third prizes will be awarded to the winners in all categories. In case of a tie, a ” sudden death” taste-off will be held.

The identities of the wines, which will be from various wine growing regions of California, will be disclosed at the conclusion of each round.

A group of North Coast wine making veterans teamed to create a massive 120,000 square foot custom crush facility in southern Mendocino County located at 14100 Mountain House Road, Hopland, California. It offers a rare, if not a unique service to the industry: sparkling wine production.

Rack and Riddle Custom Wine Services was founded in 2007 by longtime colleagues Bruce Lundquist and Rebecca Faust. Lundquist is a former general manager for J Vineyards & Winery in Healdsburg, and Faust worked for Piper Sonoma and Healdsburg’s Lambert Bridge Winery as CEO. Former J winemaker Oded Shakked joined Rack and Riddle as director of winemaking.

Rack and Riddle just completed a 50,000 square foot addition including a 17,000 square foot canopied crush pad, bringing its total size to 120,000 square feet, and is equiped with about a million gallons of stainless steel tanks, with the equipment and capacity to produce nearly 500,000 cases of wine annually.

Because sparkling wine is so labor-intensive, and time consuming, it requires special equipment and expertise. Less than 10% of U. S. wineries produce sparkling wines. Rack and Riddle has opened the door for small producers interested in expanding their lines to include sparkling wine.

Rack and Riddle now has 25 workers on staff, including winemaker Penny Gadd-Coster, cellar master Tom Meeker and production manager Lisa kashin, all J Vineyards alumni. Its full wine lab is headed by enologist Laurie Adams.

The new riddling machines has 8 cages each. Each cage can hold 576 sparkling wine bottles. So, each riddling machine will be able to riddle 4,608 bottles at once. At approximately 4 pounds each, that is 18,432 pounds per machine. The ultimate payload, is a quarter-million cases of sparkling wine every year.

Amanda Robinson Holstine and her brother Zac Robinson along with their parents and spouces are currently running the Husch Winery today.

The Husch Vineyards was planted in 1968 and the winery was established in 1971, by Tony and Gretchun Husch. When the Husch family put the winery up for sale eight years later, neighboring grape grower Mr. Oswald sealed the deal after walking the vineyard with Tony Husch.

The Oswalds were second and third generation Mendocino farmers and had seven children, including the Robinson’s mother Beelu. When Beelu married Richard Robinson they became the next generation to continue the Husch Winery.

One of the perks for the customer of a family operated winery is that they still answer the phone just like the family did at the beginning.

Things that haven’t changed at Husch, besides the consistency of Husch wines, is the tasting room. Husch’s rough, hewn tasting room resembles the original dwelling of the homesteaders who first settled this region. It was actually once a pony barn and a grainary for storing animal feed.

Inside the tasting room you may find Zac’s wife Krista or Amanda welcoming you. Amanda is there at least two days a week, and krista works the tasting room and manages sales to Ukiah restaurants and stores.

Husband Brad Holstine is Husch’s winemaker. Brad studied engineering at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and worked at wineries in the central coast area. This is where Amanda met Brad. They married and she became executive director of the Monterey County Wine Commission.

When the Robinson branch of the HA Oswald family decided to rearrange the ownership from the second to third generation six years ago, the family came together. Amanda and Brad, who had winemaking background, with their kids, were ready to move back to Mendocino County. So, with their parents consultation, they are working more than full time to run Husch Vineyards.

Husch’s mainstays are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chenin Blanc, and Gewerztraminer. In addition they are having fun creating small bottlings of special wines.

Another aspect of Husch that continues is the self guided vineyard tour. The tour begins near an owl box, one of four around the 60 acre property. The grove of redwood trees is down the hill. From the top of the hill are classic Anderson Valley views of Oak trees and redwoods with sloping hillsides. There’s a classic old barn to the east. The original craftsman style house nestles among the oak trees to the west. And a modern swing set brings you to the present.

They have now transferred to the third generation of owners of Husch Vineyards. The foundation is solid thanks to their parents and grand parents.

Husch is located at 4400, Highway 128, Philo, California. It is about 10 miles northwest of Booneville.

The category of organic wines is growing slowly but steadily. The USDA lists certain requirements in order for wines to be certified as organic. These prerequisites state that a grape’s origin must be from pesticide-free vineyards. A wine maker is also prohibited from adding any additional sulfites to the wine. Although the movement is still a little green, there are several easily accessible brands producing quality wines.

If California had an organic wine Mecca, then it might very well be Mendocino County. Lolonis Vineyards in Mendocino has been making organic wines long before it was trendy. Their non-vintage Cuvee of French Columbard, Semillon, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay has naturally solved the dilemma of how to be pesticide free. Lolonis Lady Bug White comes from vineyards that use Mother Nature’s own pest remover, the lady bug. Smooth as slate with fresh mineral notes and stone fruit flavors, Lolonis Lady Bug White is a perfect patio sipper and one of the more affordable organic wines at $13.44. It also comes in a red blend mysteriously dubbed Lolonis Lady Bug Red.

Another of Mendocino County’s organic output comes from Jeriko Vineyards, the 2003 Jeriko Merlot. With a vanilla creaminess and loads of soft fruit flavors of plum and cherry, Jeriko Merlot makes it easy for the rookie organic consumer to cross over to the green side. The Jeriko Merlot may cost a little more at $18.99, but it’s a biodynamic attempt at doing what comes naturally. Similarly, if you’re looking for the same quality that is also food friendly, then check out the 2003 Jeriko Syrah with its drier style and heartier overtones.

Paul Dolan’s roots are planted firmly in biodynamic practices, trailblazing in sustainable farming.

After 27 years with Fetzer Vineyards, Winemaker and later President, Paul Dolan, devotes his time to working 70 acres of biodynamic grapes at Dark Horse Ranch near Ukiah. Paul with his son Jason helps manage the vineyards.

“Biodynamic is just good farming” Dolan said. “We lost the art of farming”. It became totally technical. Any type of mechanization or new system or chemical, we were immediately attracted to and thought it was going to improve productivity and improve quality. “What was lost there was the exploration, the discovery”.

It was over the years that he began to sense the importance of sustainablility. From the growing of the grapes to the building of the business and the nurturing of employees. He thought about it enough to lay out a blueprint in book form: “True to Our Roots: Fermenting a Business Revolution” came out in 2003. Dolan wrote, his entire way of thinking about grape growing was about to change, with huge ramifications for him personally. He concluded that the wine industry wouldn’t have a future under standard operating procedures. There had to be a better, more sustainable way.

Dolan also introduced the Code of Sustainable Wine Growing to members of the Wine Institute, a public policy advocacy group for California wineries formed in 1934. His code become a workbook laying out the ecological, economic and social criteria for becoming sustainable. Dolan later served as chairman of the Wine Institute which had 928 members in 2006-07.

Dolans’s message and methods resonated not only because of what he was saying but because of who he was — a winemaker and businessman not only talking the talk but walking the walk.

When Dolan bought the Dark Horse Ranch in 1998, Vines were dying, fences had fallen into disrepair, and the buildings needed reconstruction. Paul Dolan with sons Heath and Jason rebuilt and replanted, focusing on grenach noir, syrah, petite sirah and zinfandel with smaller amounts of cabernet sauvignon and mourvedre.

But in going biodynamic, even Dolan had some convincing to do. When he said biodynamic the first time to his sons, there reaction was no way. But when he said its not really about that, it’s about listening, opening up your awareness and exploring new ways of farming, that’s how I got my boys involved.

Biodynamics is a form of farming that attempts to be self-sustained, self-contained and harmonious with nature. There is an international certifying body called Demeter whose standards are said to exceed those of the National Organic Program.

In the vineyard, Dolan tries to create the best possible environment for his grapes to grow in, putting in different cover crops that have different blooms to attract different insects and also absorb nitrogen out of the air. Ultimately it comes down to the soil Dolan figures, so he feeds the soil with compost, with biodynamic preparations — instead of feeding the plant. His methods are attracting a host of interested grape buyers from St. Helena to Anderson Valley.

In 2004, Dolan started making his own wines from some of the grapes under the label Paul Dolan Vineyards, wines he crafts over at Parducci.

By 2006 he felt the quality of what was coming off Dark Horse Ranch was starting to exceed even his own expectations. The perception of biodynamic grapes is high Dolan says but not everybody’s willing to do it themselves, but they know it’s good, and there is something unique going on.
