“Very Satisfied”

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Excellent service & amenities. They went out of the way to think of every small detail. Food is well worth the price. Only item I suggest is that or room had a few maintenance items that needed attention. Will stay again.

“Loved Stevenswood”

Monday, October 20th, 2008

We just got back from a short trip to the small town of Mendocino. We stayed at Stevenswood Resort and Spa, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

One of the best features for us, was that they are dog friendly! And they really are! We have a small dog, and she is not any trouble, but they went above and beyond in their attitude towards her. We were able to take her almost everywhere (actually both at the Resort and the town) we went.

Daily breakfast was included in the night’s stay, and it was fantastic! They have a menu to choose from (not just a buffet), and we had delicious breakfasts each day… such as a 3-egg omlette with bacon, spinach, and cheese, fresh fruit , and a just baked wonderful scone, with some of the best jam I’ve ever had. Everything so fresh and delicious!

The room was spacious with a living area with huge glass windows looking out into the trees, a bedroom area, and also included an area with a small refrigerator, coffee pot, and a few other basic items.

They have two lovely patio/porch areas on the second floor that look out into the woods, and one with a partial view of the ocean which we enjoyed on two of the days we were there. We just sat up enjoying the view, relaxing, reading a book.

Really a great little place - absolute fantastic staff and food, we will definitely recommend, as well as go back ourselves!

“Charming and relaxing”

Monday, October 20th, 2008

My new husband and I just returned from a two night “mini”-moon at Stevenswood. We were very pleasantly surprised with the overall experience. I wouldn’t so much describe Stevenswood as a “Resort” so much as a sort of posh bed and breakfast.

Travelers should note that the place is TINY. As in 10 total guest rooms tiny. So don’t come expecting a big hotel. Instead, expect to feel like a guest in someone’s home, expect the person at the front desk to know your first name (and your pet’s name!), and expect to feel like you sort of have the run of the place. The resort was full, but the only time my husband and I really came into contact with other guests was at breakfast - the rest of the time we felt like the only people staying there!

As a result of the place only having 10 guest rooms, the whole operation is quite small. The fitness center is just a few (as in three) cardio machines and some weights - but when you are the only person using the room, why would you need anything else? There are two spas right next to each other, separated by a wood fence for privacy. They are both quiet and feel secluded… small yes, but again, the chance of running into another hotel guest seems quite minimal. The grounds are also small, but they are lovely and well maintained and back up into a pretty forest. We saw deer and tons of birds while wondering around outside. The ocean views are fairly limited - but I think the woodsy feel is far more charming.

Another detail I loved was the abundance of fireplaces. Each guest room has one, the dining room has one, and there is at least one on the back deck. There is nothing quite as nice as the combination of cool coastal air and a nice toasty fire. Hubby and I made sure to build one every chance we got. :)

Also - the breakfast was delicious! (You MUST try the quiche and and the Challa french toast) Unlike the dinner menu, the breakfast is the same everyday - so don’t expect to be surprised with the chef’s latest creation at breakfast. But do expect a very tasty meal that will fill you up before your morning walk along the bluffs. The dinner was wonderful and I found the chef’s combination of ingredients to be quite delightful and unexpected (Celery root soup with cocoa nibs? Awesome!) All and all the food was absolutely wonderful.

One downside to Stevenswood is that once you make a reservation, you can’t change it… I thought this was very odd at first. However I now understand - they only have 10 rooms in the ENTIRE place. So it makes sense that they can’t just have people calling and canceling. Their business is too small to absorb that sort of uncertainty. Luckily, although they won’t let you change your reservation, they are very accommodating and will try to work with you if something comes up. For instance, our cat got very ill the day we were supposed to head to Stevenswood. When we called to cancel the room (and were told that we couldn’t just cancel) Michael offered to try to re-sell the room so that we wouldn’t be charged, he also offered to let us bring our sick kitty with us, so that we could still have our mini-honeymoon and not have to leave our “baby” behind. We opted to bring the cat with us and it worked out perfectly! It’s not very often that you find hotel-type places that will allow you to bring cats - but Michael explained that he was a pet owner too and could easily relate to our apprehension about leaving her behind. This was definitely a nice “human” touch that you’d never find at a big hotel.

The only other semi-negative is that I thought the massages in the spa were a bit of a let down. Maybe it’s because the rest of our stay was so wonderful, but I definitely didn’t feel that the couple’s massage, that hubby and I paid a small fortune for, quite measured up to our expectations. Oh well.

“Pampered Luxury”

Monday, October 20th, 2008

I am not sure which establishment “PearTree05″ is referring to in the recent review of 9/26, as we were in the middle of our very enjoyable stay at Stevenswood during that period of time. I am assuming we had the same owners and staff that PearTree did and they were fabulous. I am not sure Nelson could jump any higher out of his chair to open the door for us or any other guest that he happen to notice pulling up to the front door.

The food was fantastic - the Tuscan Scramble breakfast was my favorite with some of the best scones I have ever eaten. The staff was very attentive with the type of service you would expect on a cruise ship - (the maid staff somehow made up our room in the time we spent at breakfast every morning)

The spa services were among the best we’ve received and all delivered with a smile. I noticed another reviewer complained about false advertising on the website. The website advertises that the certain rooms have a distant ocean view - we had one of those rooms, and it had exactly that - a distant ocean view. If you want a room or cabin right on the ocean - you can get that somewhere else, but it is not what Stevenswood offers or advertises. Stevenswood strength is in the whole package of the great spa services, great food, and comfortable rooms with a nice view. This is one of the few inns we have ever stayed in where we actually took advantage of the fireplace - one of the reasons being that the staff had the fireplace “match ready” (each day, a fully assembled pile of kindling, firewood, and paper, was prepared as part of the room service so we were able to come back from dinner or a soak in the hot tub, light a match, and have an instant fire in our fireplace…and they actually have dry wood available that burns- hard to even find in a state or national park!)

Regarding PearTree’s claim of unscrupulous business practices, you should be specific if you make that kind of claim. I can tell you that dealing with Michael (one of the co-owners) has been anything but. We purchased and prepaid for a vacation package for 2 couples, 2 rooms and at the last minute our friends that were going to join us had to back out due to an illness in the family. Michael could have easily referred us to the fine print that shows the package is non-refundable. Instead, he worked with us very cordially to offset our friend’s cost with any extra revenue he was able to bring in by re-renting one of the rooms. This was extra hassle for Michael for which he did not earn anything. Standard practice would have been to keep our full payment and then make more by rebooking the unused room. Unscrupulous would have been to try to somehow charge even more. Michael is far from unscrupulous! As a result of Michael’s straight-forward business dealings, we went out of our way to spend more money at the resort than we had planned(extra spa sessions, dinner, etc.) because we appreciated Michael’s fair-minded approach.

I would imagine PearTree would label this review as “fiticious” (at least spell it correctly if you are going to make that kind of accusation) - I assure you, this is not a fictitious review and I have checked the box that allows other travelers to contact me in case you are concerned that this review is bogus. I live 2000 miles from Stevenswood, and until our stay had never met anyone from Stevenswood -

We have already referred other friends and family to Stevenswood. We had a fantastic time.

“Very Nice Getaway”

Monday, October 20th, 2008

My wife and I spent two wonderful days and nights at Stevenswood. The resort was above our expectations. The rooms were large, clean and tastefully decorated. We loved that the resort is set back into the wooded area … the view was soothing and enjoyable. The staff was delightfully personable and service was excellent. We did not take advantage of massages nor spa treatments but we enjoyed the hot tub … was especially fond of the private and enclosed tub (must be reserved for a specific time).

We had heard of the gourmet restaurant but, again, it was above expectations … the entrees could not have been any better … imaginative and prepared to perfection.

Stevenswood was a wonderful getaway for us and we will return as well as recommend it to others.
