July 25, 26, 27, 2013
The Mendocino Coast Writers Conference began as a one day event in at what was the Fort Bragg Center of the Arts. The following year the conference grew from a one day writers conference, and later on to a Friday afternoon, all day Saturday and Sunday morning session. Then from 1998 to 2005, Suzanne Byerley creative writing instructor, and Ginny Rorby, Fort Bragg author, co-directed the conference with help form a diverse and able committee. They oversaw growth and increasing success for what became a three day conference.
The Mendocino Coast Writers Conference each year is limited to 100 participants, where excellent writers who are also the teachers at this conference will be here to encourage you. The Mendocino Coast Writers Conference gives you a wide range of genres. Choose from novel, poetry, short fiction or memoirs or maybe a little of it all.
Workshops: There will be three morning sessions in a specific topic, and you will stay with the same workshop leader for all three days. You will be asked to send in a sample of your work beforehand to read and be critiqued. During the day, you can expect to talk about your work, discuss techniques to help your writing and practice some of those techniques.
Master Class: This is the only workshop that participants are selected by a jury and the group size is smaller than the other workshops and there is an additional fee, which will be returned if you are not accepted into the class. To apply, you must submit a writing sample of up to ten pages, double-spaced, in twelve point type in the genre offered for the year. Deadlines are on the registration page. If you are accepted into the master class, you may continue revising your manuscript and resubmit it to be read and critiqued during the workshop.
Afternoon Lectures and Discussion Sessions: The sessions are shorter than the morning workshops, each focused on a particular area: poetry, non-fiction, revision, or chats with editors and agents. You will not be asked to send in work in advance. You may have a chance to practice in class the techniques talked about.
Professional Consultation: Please schedule in advance for a twenty minute private session with the author, agent, or editor of your choice. You will be asked to send up to ten pages of your work beforehand. Cost $60
Readings: A highlight of the conference so often is a reading by presenters and contest winners.
Bookstore: The Gallery Bookshop of Mendocino will be on-site during the conference featuring books by conference faculty and books on the craft of writing.
Breakfast & Lunch: Served daily on the campus will be a continental breakfast and a cold lunch of salads or sandwiches. Also coffee, soft drinks and water are available all day.
Evenings: On Thursday evening, there will be a welcoming reception with wine and hors d’ oevres. Friday evening is free for you to explore local restaurants, and Saturday evening will be the conference gala dinner with the keynote speech.
