2011 California Wine Tasting Championships

Located only 45 minutes from Stevenswood Spa Resort on Saturday, July 31 at Greenwood Ridge Vineyards, at Philo on Highway 128 in the Anderson Valley wine growing region will be the California Wine Tasting Championships. This unique event was started in 1983, and over the years, thousands have participated. They call it a wine tasting competition, but it’s really a chance to have a lot of fun and learn a few tasting techniques while enjoying a great selection of wines. Included with the wine tasting competitions are chocolate and cheese tasting contests, and a series of wine friendly snacks served throughout the day. Sign up in the category that fits: Novice, amateur or professional. Everyone is welcome to take advantage of our complimentary wine tasting boot camp, where you will get tips to boost your confidence and your score. How does it work: There will be samples of eight California wines that will appear at your table. It’s your job to identify each varietal. Is it a Cabernet or maybe a Zinfandel? They make it easy by giving you a list of ten common varietals from which to choose. You will make your guesses and they reveal the identity of each wine. In the double competition, you and your partner can compare notes before making your decisions. If you are one of the top three finishers in the amateur or pro division you advance to the Grand Championship round. Ties are broken by “sudden death” taste-offs, offering dramatic entertainment for the spectators. Top finishers in each division will receive personalized certificates, great prizes, and recognition in there fall newsletter. Rules: A contestant may enter the California Wine Tasting Championships as a novice, amateur or professional. Anyone professionally involved with wine production, wine sales, or wine writing must enter the professional category. Contestants must be 21 years old. Contestants may enter both the singles competition, held on Saturday and the double on Sunday. In doubles competitions, partners are permitted to confer after tasting each wine. Each contestant or team will taste eight wines, sequentially, with four minutes allowed to identify each wine by varietal name. Tasters with scores in the top 50% will advance to the final round, in which they will taste and identify eight more wines. In the final round, bonus points will be awarded for correct identification of region, vintage date, and producer. First, second and third prizes will be awarded to the winners in all categories. In case of a tie, a ” sudden death” taste-off will be held. The identities of the wines, which will be from various wine growing regions of California, will be disclosed at the conclusion of each round.
